Linda's Oscar round-up

Just kidding, I didn't watch the Academy Awards show last night. I did, however, drink some beer with friends and watch basketball. A much better way to spend the evening, if I do say so myself. Come to think of it, that pretty much sums up the entire weekend for me.

Back in the dance?

Despite the fact my sinuses are waging war on me right now and may even explode before the day is over, this still makes me happy. The Hoosiers played one heckuva game yesterday. The only thing that could be better would be for these guys to lose a game and let us hold on to this.

It's Friday's diversion...

And it's still Thursday. Lucky you.

Go ahead and relax and think of tofu and yoga and create a zen garden.

Personally, I have found it's more therapeutic to watch the garden clean itself up (click in the white area) than to create it. Then again, I'm a little obsessive compulsive at times...

Not this fish... at least not right now

But if this fish had any desire to have a bicycle, she'd be ordering one of these right now.

What to do this evening?

Go to The French Quarter Cafe at 7:00 and spend half an hour rockin' out with BB (and having a beer with me).

BTW, the show will be broadcast live on their web site, should you feel like being a hermit this evening...

Now what?

Have you ever thought about someone from your past, and thought how you would like to know how they are, where they are, and just be assured they are ok?

I have.

For over 12 years.

And I just found him. Well, I found his web site through the magic of the internet.

And it looks like he's doing ok. :)

Movies, movies, movies...

Google announced movie-specific searching today. You can find the source of a quote, figure out what not to see, search by actor, or find out what's playing near you.

So what's next? A music/lyric/artist search with links to download a file and/or purchase a CD? Maybe.

Nickname needed...

Earlier today, I was telling some coworkers about my night out in Spring Hill, and the DJ/trivia host who decided to refer to me as "Wild Lady Linda". They both seemed to think the moniker was appropriate. I played the "I'm an IT nerd, not some crazy chick" card.

They didn't buy it.

"Well, what's your nickname, then?", was the question. And a good question it was.

I don't have one.

Nope. Well, not a "global" nickname that is used by anyone who knows me well enough. I have had a few "pet names" over the years - just none that ever caught on. It used to bother me, especially during the school years, when I couldn't turn my name into something ending in "i" (although I was lucky enough to already have that coveted vowel in my name, allowing me to use the god-awful heart or smiley face as a dot -- I'm proud to say I have outgrown that habit). But, I digress...

My brother calls me "Princess Linda Victoria", but only because I used to call myself that in junior high. He also calls me "Lucille", which started out as "Linda Lou", and evolved to "Linda Lucille" before he completely eliminated my own name from the equation. He also calls me "Dumb ass", but usually only when I deserve it. Come to think of it, I call myself that quite often. Just ask any of my neighbors in cubeland.

A friend during my college years called me "Lulu" (another variation of Linda Lou, I suppose) and a guy I dated once called me "Wojo" in an attempt to annoy me, until he realized it didn't annoy me.

Mom used to call me "Boo", but I have no idea why. I'm sure she doesn't recall, either. Let's not even waste our time asking her.

The manager at E calls me "Trouble", but my bar tabs are usually named "Leeendah".

I've never been "Lin" (nor "Duh", thankfully). Should I even dare to add "yet" to that?

Things that make you go "hmm..."

According to their web site, "The Parents Television Council was founded in 1995 to ensure that children are not constantly assaulted by sex, violence and profanity on television and in other media."

Would "other media" include the 10 worst clips they post on their site?

This is why we need alcohol

The Vancouver blogger meetup was a little more interesting than Nashville. Although, I don't know if we need to get THAT personal...

What a great idea.

Rent a tablet PC just like mine:

Worst ever referral

Sorry, I know this is not cool, but I just had the worst ever search engine referred link to me ever.

I'm number 1 on Yahoo for this query... Ewwwww!

"Im 14 and my sister and I had sex with her yesterday"

This is what I've been saving myself for...

Forget, I'm using this service...

Another Q&A

More Q&A - leave a comment or send an email if you really need to know something...

Q: What's on your TiVo?

A: Right now, Good Eats, Inside the Actors Studio, MI5, Modern Marvels, Monk, The Simpsons, and South Park.

Q: How about a picture?

A: uh... yeah. Something tells me this is a residual thing from Saturday's meet-up (and Roboto's not so nonchalant "see pictures" annotation).
If you take the time to look, you'll find plenty here.

Q: Did you have a good Valentine's Day?

A: Well, it was my first day back to work after a week off, but I did get flowers. And I spent happy hour with friends and went out for sushi. And sake. Yum.

Q: So how did you start blogging?

A: My job.

The ultimate TiVo Q&A

The Morning News has A great TiVo FAQ. My favorite:
Q: Is TiVo expensive?

A: This question makes no sense. In a future world, where mankind has destroyed its remaining clean air and drinking water and such necessities require payment, will you be asking how much it costs to draw breath? I didn't think so.

FeedDemon 1.5

If you are a blog reader (and you are, because you're here), you really need an aggregator. Why not get the best?

FeedDemon 1.5 is released (and as I've mentioned before, rocks).

BTW - Nick is a Nashville blogger - where was he Saturday?

Who says I don't know how to have fun?

For my non-Nashville readers, here's what I did Saturday morning.

To you and yours...

Blogger comments revamped

So Blogger redid their comment system and now allow you to leave your name and a link to your website, without having to have a Blogger account (just select "other"). It's about time - although I feel personally responsible for more than one blogger who started out just because of signing up for an account to leave a comment without being "anonymous".

What I did on my vacation...

OK, first of all, what I didn't do. I did not call one person. I did not make one phone call asking anyone to lunch or dinner or drinks or anything.

I responded.

And this is so not like me.

So, I answered my phone (when it was convenient) and accepted invitations. And if you are a friend of mine and did not see me this week, it's because you didn't call me. And I don't hold it against you - just don't hold it against me. I understand if you didn't call because I was off work and you didn't want to bother me.

What else did I do? I think I killed my only non-silk house plant. And I went gambling and tried to lose a lot of money, but actually came home with just as much as I left with. And I relaxed. I let go. And I had fun.

And there's more to come, because I enjoyed it.

Thursday outing

Hey everyone, BB's at the French Quarter Cafe at 6:15 Thursday... What else do you have going on? I think I can fit it in after my massage.

Please tell me I don't have to go back to work next week. :)

Google Maps

After spending most of the morning playing on Google maps, I decided there was nothing fun to report.

Apparently, Darren's brain isn't on vacation, as he gives a pretty good write up.

Goodbye Mapquest. Goodbye, MSN Maps. It's a bit early to say for sure, but it looks like Google has gone cartographic on your asses.

Update: Here's more info - it's a pretty slick app.

Well, at least it was a good game. And I made a friendly wager that the Pat's wouldn't cover and made back my bar tab, so I'm even for the night. I guess that can count as today's fun, since the IU game sure can't. I do have to say that only being down 6 at half was a surprise, and the end result wasn't as bad as it could/should have been with one of our best guys out.

The ads were mediocre, at best. Here they are, in case you missed them... The banned ads are there too.

"Vacation" day 1

Although it doesn't look like I'll be leaving town for more than a day or two during my week off, I'm determined to have fun each and every day for the next 9 days.

So, I'll be heading to Memorial Gym later to watch some hoops. The last game I went to there wasn't a whole lot of fun for me, but as I don't have a favorite (if either team was playing anyone else other than the Hoosiers, I would cheer them on), how can I be disappointed?

It's not breakfast at Tiffany's, but...

I had dinner the other evening with my sister. In conversation, I mentioned that I had heard the Plaza was going condo.

She called me this afternoon at work and said she had decided to go to New York City for her birthday and was considering staying at the famous hotel, as it will be the last weekend it's open.

After she twisted my arm (yeah, right), I agreed to 3 days in the big apple.

So far, we have Yankees tickets for Friday evening, and a luxurious room overlooking Central Park with a request for early check-in, late check-out, feather pillows, and 2 reservations for the last 3 hour all you can eat, all you can drink mimosas and bloody marys Sunday brunch.

So far so good.

And still almost 3 months to finish planning. :)

There is hope...

Just got off the phone with BB, who has decided "there is hope in the world", as "the self-proclaimed pessimist" (that's me) "wears a perfume named happy".

Good thing I didn't tell her I've tried happy heart and HATED it.

More proof I'm easily amused...

(As if we needed it)

Game day...

The Hoosiers are back at home this evening - and that's always been a good scenario against Penn State. Unfortunately, the game is at 5:00, and I'm guessing it will be next to impossible to get out of work on time, let alone half an hour early to catch the beginning of the game...

So let's hope for a decent (but not outstanding) first half, traffic that's light enough for me to make it to Cool Springs by halftime, and a Hoosier win in the end.

Is there a support group for gadget junkies?

HP just announced their latest Tablet PC. And although I have never had a complaint about my Tablet (well, OK - the battery life sucks, but I can work around that). I have to admit I'm fighting a major case of tablet envy. Granted, it's not available yet, so it's not like I'll run into someone at the airport (the ONLY place I run into tablet users - we seek each other out at the security checkpoint and then spend an hour at the bar comparing favorite features and apps - and I'm not kidding) with one any time soon.

Maybe my birthday present to myself (110 days to go - is that all?) will help.

Things would be a lot easier on my budget if I craved chocolate, not technology...

The latest mailbag Q&A

Q: Are you ever going to answer more questions?

A: Sure:

Q: So how about that vacation?

A: Can't wait. A full week without an alarm clock or work or meetings or email or voice mail... :)

Q: So did those comments from a few weeks ago ever bring any funny googlers?

A: Not really, although I think this Q&A feature prompted this search:
"free answer of my sex question through e mail". Never received the email though, so I certainly cannot answer whatever his question was. It could have spiced things up a bit, though. ;)

Q: You still thinking about abandoning E?

A: To be honest, there is not a better place for me to go watch my boys play basketball, as I know I can get a dedicated television and (usually) a wireless speaker to listen to the commentary and play-by-play. E will continue to be my game day spot. I'll also go there periodically to meet friends and play trivia and watch other games, but it's just not the same. Change is good - and maybe this change is good for someone else, just not me.

Q: What's up with the "maybe" on the Nashville Bloggers Meetup? Are you being a tease or just waiting to see who else goes?

A: It's during my vacation. I might be there, and I will update my status as soon as I know. Promise.
